A Condor Airlines A330 en route from Frankfurt to Cancun had to divert to Shannon, Ireland after the pilot spilled his coffee into the radio located in the center console . First the captain’s radio shorted out and started smoking, then the first officer’s radio overheated and failed . The flight deck crew donned oxygen masks due to smoke in the cockpit, and t he airliner landed safely. C ondor is looking into getting cups that actually fit into the cup holders.

I am a test engineer for a company that manufactures cockpit displays. I have routinely performed this test on various equipment using various fluids including cola, coffee, and tea. There’s a publication that defines the test and an ISO standard that defines the fluid.
Nearly every piece of airplane equipment is design tested. I’m really surprised this happened.

That’s interesting. It certainly makes sense to test like that, but I never considered it.

They would only need two cup holders. Nine would be too many.

It’s too random, it’s not a built in bug...I mean feature. This relies on the pilot/co-pilot to bring a coffee and place it in the wrong spot.

I'm amazed how some things are tested and how much abuse they can take before failure.

Radio? Why didn’t they just use Spotify or Pandora or something?

Don’t worry, the engineers will devise a coffee dispensing apparatus and place it immediately above the radios, ensuring
that the device operates deterministically.
![]() 09/13/2019 at 16:01 |
|
Then the device is going to require a very unreliable yaw sensor that will fail, sending hot coffee right into the radio stack

Does the test specify heat?

See, this is what happens when your pilots have drinking problems...

They gave him a cup with no lid. That person should be banned from all aircraft.

Yes, for the unit, air temperature and fluid temperature. And it varies depending on the fluid applied. Usually to cause the most damage.

Of the consumable liquids I’ve tested, cola is by far the worst.

Maybe this particular A330 had very bad seals or for some reason those weren’t properly maintained/installed

Well, he also accepted it. Sounds like the cup, with or without lid, was too short for the holder and difficult to take out. Cap’n needs his own travel mug.

CUN airport is the brainchild of Florida Man and Mediocre Mexican bureocrat.
It has a “welcome” bar outside the terminal so that people can *drink* while they wait for their cab. Outside... they have shades, and play trash music and charge 5 dollars for a beer that sells for 2 normally.
The airport has horrible misspellings on the emergency exit routings and the currency exchange next to baggage claim is like a fraud.
The only good thing about CUN airport is that it has the minimum distance between runways required to operate them simultaneously.

Happens all the damn time. I seriously recommended zippy cups for all the pilots with a note that if we see an open cup up there they get a swift kick in the ass.

1 ) Mandate Contigo travel mugs with the Autoseal lids for flight crews
2) Supply flight crews with Delta branded cups.
3) Sell said trav el mugs to the general public in SkyMall.
4) Profit.
5) Get promoted for saving maintenance costs on cleaning coffee out of radios.
6) Repay YCTAF for his suggestion by hooking him up with a Delta branded travel mug.
